Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, so she was taken care of by her mother, grandmother and godparents. When she was a young girl, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford's interest in acting began as a child. She joined in the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she was a poor choice for this school. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt she was admitted. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's fellow students. Shaun Dingwall went on to get regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's debut on TV was the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate started to get noticed for her stand up comedy in the year 1996.
