Gabriel Salazar Vergara (born 31 January 1936) is A Chilean historian. He is recognized in his country for his study of sociology and its interpretation of social movements, particularly the recent student protests of 2006 and 2011-12. Salazar was born into the poorest of families. He attended Universidad de Chile and studied sociology, philosophy , and history. In addition, he was an assistant to Mario Gongora and Hector Herrera Cajas the classical historian. [1] Salazar used to be a member of the Revolutionary Left Movement until 1973. Two years later, Salazar was tortured at Villa Grimaldi by the military. 2] After his release from a prison camp for military in 1976 , he entered exile to the United Kingdom. There he was given one of the scholarships that enabled him to study further at University of Hull. He received an PhD on Economic and Social History from that institution in the year 1984. He returned to Chile within the next year. Salazar was able to make a breakthrough 1985, which is relatively unnoticed. His research subjects have included laborers, peons proletariats, child females and huachos. [1] Salazar is among the founders of the historical current referred to by the name of Nueva Historia Social. Salazar regards history as the most effective instrument to guide political action.
